The Interior Design Process

People often regard interior designers as “pillow fluffers” that can magically make your Pinterest dreams come true. While designers are more than happy to help you create your dream home, there are a few more details that go into creating the perfect space. If you’ve ever wondered how interior designers develop successful projects, here is a look at their process.

PROJECT KICKOFF

In the first phase of the design process, the designer will meet with you to determine the scope of the project. During this initial consultation, you will discuss your goals for the space, and the designer will ask questions about how you live in and use your spaces. You will also discuss the budget and the designer will send you a design fee proposal.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

Once you decide to move forward with the project, the designer will delve more into your goals and needs. This is the fun part! They will look at any inspiration images you have and help develop your design style. The designer will then present mood boards and preliminary space plans for your approval.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN

The schematic phase develops even further details of the design. The designer will present their selections of specific furniture, finishes, and appliances, and create a 3D rendering to help you visualize the finished space. Here you will approve the specific items to be ordered, and review the budget.

DEVELOPMENT

For any project that involves construction, whether it be a new build or a remodel, the designer will create construction documents. This is where having a licensed designer becomes crucial because construction documents include not only the floor plan, but the lighting plan, finish schedules, and millwork drawings (cabinets, custom built-ins, etc). The designer will also communicate with the contractor.

CONSTRUCTION

While the development stage will be behind-the-scenes work, the construction phase is where you as the client will see physical progress. The actual building or remodeling will begin and the designer will schedule site visits to make sure everything is going according to plan. They will also coordinate furniture and fixture purchasing and storage until they can be installed.

INSTALLATION

In this final stage of the design process, the designer will schedule furniture and fixture installation, and add the final touch of accessories to your home. They will also create a “punch list” of any items that need to be fixed or replaced. Once everything is in place, you will finally get to see your home in the big reveal. Some design firms, like Eden & Co, will give you a project binder with all of the specifications for your home, which includes any care and maintenance instructions to help you live in and love your home for many years to come.
