SUMMER DESIGN UPDATES FOR YOUR SPACE

As the days turn longer and the evenings stay warm, we shift part of our living and entertaining to the outdoors. Now is the ideal time to freshen up your outdoor spaces to get ready. No matter how big or small your outdoor space may be, you can find a way to make it more enjoyable for the summer.

ANALYZE THE SEATING SITUATION

Think about how you use your space and who else will occupy it. If you have a small deck or patio, invest in pieces that will optimize the space. Use tables or chairs that also act as storage. In a larger space, you can add an outdoor dining table, or opt for a sectional for flexible seating arrangements. Don’t forget a hammock for optimal relaxation.

LIGHTING

Lighting is just as important outside as it is inside. If you plan to spend any time out of doors in the evenings, ensure there is ample light for each activity. Lighting is broken into three categories—ambient, task, and accent—so consider each and how it relates to your space. Ambient lighting is the main light source. A great ambient option for outside spaces is string lights. They are such a simple improvement that goes a long way to increasing the ambiance. Consider adding more focused task lighting in an outdoor kitchen or bar area, or in a fire pit for s’mores. Use staked lights to line your driveway or garden paths for accent lighting, and add candles to cozy areas.

ACCESSORIES

Accessories are the elements you’ll want to add to make your outdoor living space comfortable and stylish for yourself and your guests. Use outdoor throw pillows on sectionals and chairs. Have a basket designated for blankets for chilly nights. Purchase cups and dishes in a fun pattern or color for entertaining.

BUG REPELLANTS

The worst part of staying outside on summer evenings is the inevitable bugs. If you live in an area where mosquitos are prevalent, consider using mosquito-repelling lanterns or candles. There are stylish options if you are concerned about them being visible, but there are several discreet options as well.

LANDSCAPING

If you have a yard, get rid of weeds and dead leaves, and manicure your lawn and shrubbery. If you have a deck or screened porch, add potted plants to bring life, texture, and greenery to your space. If you have a pool, maintain and clean it regularly so it’s ready for your summer gatherings.

Your outdoor space is a valuable asset to your home in terms of the physical and mental benefits it brings, if well utilized. As you implement design techniques such as space planning, lighting, and thoughtful decorating, my hope is that you will enjoy your home even more.

Happy Summer!
