Avoid These 5 Mistakes When Designing Your Space

1. Artwork Too High

The most common mistake I see is incorrectly placed artwork. Often times I will see it way too high, too low, or too much space in between gallery-style photos. A good rule of thumb is  57”-60” from the center of the art. Of course, it is slightly subjective depending on your height, but that is a safe bet.

2.  A Rug That Is Too Small

For a living room, we recommend placing the midpoint of each furniture piece along the perimeter of the rug. 8’x10’, 9’x12’, and 12’x15’ are all good sizes. For a dining room, be sure to select a rug that extends 30” minimum beyond the table. Click HERE to subscribe and receive our free Rug Sizing Guide!

3. Furniture Too Matchy-Matchy

We love furniture that is not matching! While the 90s are back in, you should never buy a whole set that all looks the same. That is so 90’s!

4. Not Mixing High And Low-End Furniture Pieces

We suggest that you splurge on a few items such as upholstery and certain seating. You will be sitting on your sofa often, so you want it to last and be comfortable.  Artwork is another area that we see clients going high-end on, as it is so personal. You will want to add in some lower-end pieces as well. Shop local vintage for some unique finds! We love checking out antique shops for cool objects or historical value.

5. Wrong Scale Of Furniture

Nothing says low end like too small of furniture for the space. Consider the ceiling height and the overall feeling of the space. When we designed this home we had a custom sectional made extra large 44” depth so they could be comfortable, plus the ceilings were nearly 20 feet tall. Play with different scales on lighting and side tables but make sure to nail the big ticket items.

Best of luck with your space,

XOXO
